Anonymized growth data from 23 Telegram communities (1k–120k members), tracked over 18 months: joins, leaves, message volume, and moderator activity.
Three curve shapes
- Launch spike → plateau. 14 of 23 channels. The spike is bought attention; the plateau is the real community size.
- Staircase. 6 of 23. Each step maps to a content moment (listing, airdrop, drama). Steps don’t compound without retention work.
- Compounder. 3 of 23. All three shared one trait: daily moderator-initiated conversation. Growth rate correlated with moderator messages, not member messages.
The moderator multiplier
Channels with ≥1 moderator message per 50 member messages grew 3.1× faster than silent-moderated channels. Community is a verb, and the verb is posted by staff.
Caveats
Survivorship bias is real — dead channels are underrepresented. Full methodology appendix ships with the next revision.
