# Telegram Bots That Don't Suck > Why 90% of bots die in the first week and how to build one that doesn't get muted: onboarding, message rhythm, analytics. > > 2026-06-20 — y7.hk ## Why bots suck A user mutes a bot for one reason: it talks when nobody asked. Everything else is a consequence. Rule one: **a message without a request = a notification = spam**. ## Onboarding in 30 seconds ``` /start → one message: "I watch the BTC price and write only on ±5% moves. Settings — /settings. Silence — /mute" ``` No "Welcome! Here are 12 buttons." One value, one setting, one exit. ## Rhythm beats content - No more than 1 message per user per day - Digest over stream: 10 events → 1 summary - Every message ends with an action or silence — never "just information" ## The analytics that actually matter Forget DAU. Watch **mute-rate** and **reply-rate**. If a user opens the chat and replies after your message — the bot is alive. If they mute it — you built a mailing list, not a product. ## Pre-launch checklist 1. Is the bot silent by default? 2. Does the first message explain the value in 5 seconds? 3. Is there one "turn everything off" button? 4. Did you yourself avoid muting your bot after a week of testing? If all four are "yes" — ship it.
